, a world leader in customer-focused digital printing innovation, and Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. today launched the Fiery(R) IC-414 controller for the new Konica Minolta bizhub(R) C754/C654 MFPs, bringing office workgroups high-quality color, automated workflows, and unique productivity-boosting tools. Based on the latest award-winning Fiery System 10e platform, the controller delivers fully finished documents faster than ever before and offers multiple ways for mobile device users to print from their smartphones and tablets.

“Once again we have paired our advanced Fiery technology with the latest bizhub products from Konica Minolta to provide customers with an exceptional color printing solution,” said John Henze, vice president of Fiery marketing, EFI. “This launch includes many hallmark Fiery controller features that ensure outstanding color quality and ease of use along with some unique tools that boost productivity in today’s office environment, including the Fiery VUE visual application and direct mobile printing for on-the-go professionals. These are all wrapped around a scalable and modular architecture that can easily grow as the print requirements grow.”

“Konica Minolta’s ongoing partnership with EFI and Fiery technology helps boost the productivity of our products, from the bizhub family to our production print systems and digital presses,” said Kevin Kern, senior vice president of marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. “With the introduction of the IC-414, we can offer customers from the high-end office to graphics and entry light production advanced capabilities and performance to maximize their efficiency.”

The Fiery controller and bizhub MFP combination enables workgroups to increase productivity and produce more professional-looking documents in-house with easy to use tools, such as the unique Fiery VUE visual print application. It allows users to interact with a document on-screen in 3D to sculpt and preview exactly how the finished piece will look, saving time and reducing waste and costs. Integration and support of the bizhub C754/C654 finishing devices and advanced tab printing* increases productivity and further simplifies the creation of finished documents such as booklets.

With the recent explosion of smartphones and tablets, now more than ever, mobile workers need to be able to access and print their documents whether from their desktop computer or mobile device. With this launch, the Fiery controller provides a built-in mobile print option for no additional cost, enabling users to print directly via Wi-Fi from their iPad(TM), iPhone(R) and iPod touch(R) applications to a Fiery-driven printer. The Fiery controller automatically discovers and presents users with choices of Fiery-driven printers and print options for fast and easy printing.

The Fiery IC-414 delivers high-quality color and images right out of the box with Fiery ColorWise(R) technology. Spot color reproduction are built-in to the controller in Fiery Spot-On(R), enabling the most flexible and accurate tools for achieving the best match for PANTONE colors or any other specialty colors to ensure corporate colors are always right.

As printing needs grow, Fiery technology provides additional capabilities with the optional Fiery Productivity Package including features such as Image Enhance Visual Editor for on-the-fly per image correction and Fiery Hot Folders to automate document preparation in distributed print environments. These tools help users meet tight turnaround times and produce top-notch color documents the first time, while automating processes to make users more productive than ever before.

REHOVOT, Israel, Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Objet Ltd., the innovation leader in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing today announced that Oratio B.V., a leading dental industry company in the Netherlands, has developed a complete in-house digital workflow for fabrication of models for dental implants with the help of an Objet 3D Printer. The addition of 3D printing into Oratio’s workflow has turned Oratio into a fully digital dental provider, allowing it to significantly expand its implantology practice while offering higher accuracy and faster turnaround times.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120206/CL47779 )

Oratio identified the use of digital solutions for implantology as a potential growth opportunity. However, the company did not want to increase staff or costs, nor compromise its high standards. According to Siebe van der Zel, Chief Operating Officer of Oratio: “Digital dentistry could enable a new level of implant models and allow us full control of the complete process – from the dentist’s initial order, to designing the restoration, through final manufacturing.”

Leveraging its strong experience in producing dental parts from CAD design imagery, Oratio chose to integrate the Objet Eden260V 3D Printer into its workflow. Since Installing the Objet 3D Printer Oratio has digitized the entire design and manufacturing process for dental implants. This has significantly improved the productivity of dental technicians by allowing them to focus on higher-level tasks. Implant models printed by the Objet 3D Printer are delivered with exceptionally fine details and an outstanding surface finish – to the full satisfaction of Oratio’s dentist customers. Dentist clients are also benefitting from improved turnaround times, enabled by the in-house rapid manufacturing process.

Avi Cohen, Head of Medical Solutions at Objet, commented: “Practices that specialize in dental implantology inherently require support systems that are flexible and versatile. For this reason Objet’s 3D printing systems represent the perfect fit. They enable labs such as Oratio to continue delivering specialist products to market while, at the same time, even broadening their range of services with new, value-added offerings.”

Summing up the benefits, van der Zel said: “Business growth followed immediately after we installed the Objet 3D Printer. We increased our productivity and as a result we can provide new and better solutions for implantology.”

(tokyo:6971) today announced the KC-91, a
new protective overcoat that can be applied to Kyocera’s thin-film
thermal printheads commonly used in dye-sublimation printing
applications such as the self-service digital photo printing machines
increasingly found in public locations. Kyocera thermal printheads (up
to a maximum A4-size) featuring the KC-91 protective overcoat will be
sold starting Tuesday, February 7, 2012.

Features

The newly-developed KC-91 protective overcoat demonstrates the following
advantages:

–
A reduction in frictional resistance of approximately 50% over
Kyocera’s conventional overcoat*1 which is made possible
through Kyocera’s proprietary assessment technology as well as
improvements in the overcoat materials and film-formation conditions.
The result is a reduction in the occurrence of ‘wrinkles’ in the
dye-sub ink ribbon, even if the applied energy is increased by 20%,
compared to printheads with conventional overcoats.

–
The absolute value of the frictional resistance between the printhead
and the ink ribbon is reduced by a maximum of 30%.

–
Resistance to adhesion of residues (burnt deposits of ink or ink
ribbon back-coated agents) is increased by approximately six-fold,
contributing to improvements in both print speed and print quality.

–
Durability against thermo-chemical wear is increased four-fold,
contributing to increased printhead service life.

Development Background

With the increasing proliferation of high-quality digital cameras and
camera-equipped smart-phones in recent years, more people are taking and
printing digital pictures themselves, and to service the demand to print
those digital pictures, an increasing number of self-service photo
printing equipment is being installed at department stores and home
electronics stores. More dye-sublimation printers are employed in this
application than other photo-printing technologies because they offer
high print quality and compact size, allowing them to be located almost
anywhere.

The dye-sublimation printer, a type of thermal printer, works via a
process where the thermal printhead (hereinafter “head”) comes into
contact with the ink ribbon and sublimates the ink with the heat of the
head to print images on the paper. The color density is adjusted by
varying the level of applied heat (applied energy), and increased
frictional resistance is created between the head and ribbon as the
applied energy increases. Differences in applied energy simultaneously
in different locations on the head can result in differences in
frictional resistance, causing the ink ribbon to move at different
speeds and subsequently wrinkle, which in turn affects print speed and
print quality.

Addressing the demand for equipment capable of printing higher quality
photos faster, Kyocera has developed the new KC-91 protective overcoat
to significantly reduce the likelihood of ribbon wrinkles caused by
differential frictional resistances and to improve print speeds and
print quality.

With the world’s No.1 market share*2 for thermal printheads,
Kyocera strives to develop products that meet diverse customer needs and
prove useful in everyday life.

*1 Kyocera’s conventional KC-14 protective overcoat and the new KC-91
protective overcoat were compared through continuous printing by
commercial printers; based on research by Kyocera. *2 As of January
31, 2012; based on research by Kyocera.

Promo products companies printing 25,000+ shirts overnight after Super Bowl

TREVOSE, Pa., Feb. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — No matter which team scores the Super Bowl trophy, T-shirt printers will be big winners, printing tens of thousands of logoed shirts overnight for devoted football fans to snap up Monday morning.

The Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) said hundreds of promotional products companies will work into the wee hours Sunday into Monday to get Super Bowl items to sports fans waiting for commemorative T-shirts, jackets and other logoed items.

“The ad specialty industry works overtime whenever there’s a big national event to make sure everyone who wants a special keepsake gets one,” said Timothy M. Andrews, president and chief executive officer of ASI, the largest member organization representing the $18.5 billion promotional products industry. “ASI research shows logoed T-shirts generate huge sales among Super Bowl fans and that companies continue to order them all year long to give away to promote their brands or thank their clients.”

Jay Meyer, president of ASI member Blue Dolphin Screen Print Embroidery of New Hampshire, heads one of hundreds of companies working tons of OT this weekend to keep sports fans happy.

If the New England Patriots win in the big game against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI, Blue Dolphin expects to print at least 25,000 shirts overnight in the initial order.

“The big sports stores start showing up around 3 a.m. because they want to have the apparel ready in the morning when they open,” said Meyer. “If it’s really doing well, they’ll reorder, probably another 5,000. Last week after the AFC championship, we printed 7,000 shirts.”

Over 40 employees will work on the initial order, starting by the game’s third quarter. Printing starts as soon as the game finishes. And even if the hometown team fails to take home the title, Meyer said Blue Dolphin still expects to print at least 9,000 Giants shirts.

Just a year and change since the protests that marked the beginning of the Egyptian revolution, Wael Ghonim was in Chicago this weekend for a conversation about his new book, Revolution 2.0, and questions about social activism.

He spoke with the Tribune’s Julia Keller in a Printers Row program at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Rubloff Auditorium and then took questions from the avid audience members, nearly a hundred of whom bought or brought copies of the book for his autograph.

Reflecting a clear current of support for Ghonim’s social activism, one woman alluded to America’s Occupy Wall Street and related protests, decrying what she described as attempts at censorship and asking how people in the United States could make their voices heard. “I want to ask your advice from the heart,” she said.

“That’s the brilliance of the Internet,” Ghonim responded, noting that it cannot be blocked, that open sourcing and inevitable leaks of information from sources in government and power give the Internet reach and strength. Efforts to stifle dissent on the Internet eventually lose, he observed.

The issue of abundance in the hands of very few is global in scope, Ghonim continued. “There is no social justice in the world,” he said.

That Egypt’s economic situation and widespread poverty made the country ripe for a people-based movement is a theme of his book. Through a Facebook page he managed, Ghonim gave voice to, first, thousands and then millions who collectively answered his call to take to the streets on Jan. 25, 2011, which was Egypt’s Police Day, a national holiday.

Just as the protests begin to build, he was taken into custody for 12 days, interrogated, beaten; upon his release, he spoke on national television and the protests grew. In four days, the Mubarak regime of three decades collapsed. The Egyptian demands for democracy unleashed what came to be known as the Arab Spring, as people in other countries staged their own demonstrations.

Ghonim remains unwilling to take what he considers undue credit for what he calls the leaderless revolution, despite many who would have him be the face of the uprising. The proceeds from his book, he said, will go to charity, to help the impoverished in Egypt or those hurt or suffering from injuries in the violence.

At this Printers Row program, questions kept returning to activism. You speak of interest in an evolving democracy, a woman noted. What do you mean by that? Define democracy? And, how can Americans visibly support your efforts?

To that, Ghonim said that in a way, democracy is a call to individual action, to realize that each person acts from strength and is a dictator in a sense, in his own behalf, and that people must come together.

He made a distinction about American support. There is the government, he said, and then there are the American people. The U.S. government has a long history of questionable practices supporting regimes without regard to the effect on the people, he said. Even in the case of the Mubarak regime, U.S. policy was to support the government in power – until it began to be clear that the regime was going to lose and the people would win, Ghonim said.

American people, he said in answer to this and similar questions need to be more aware of the impact of the U.S. foreign policy. In a practical way, he said, Americans could support economic development. And tourism, he added.

Ghonim, who is on leave from a marketing position with Google, fielded questions with a mix of serious responses and gentle humor. At one point, a man referred to the upcoming economic summit in Chicago in May and asked how protesters could change that world stage into a high-profile moment to call attention to income gap and economic disparity. The Tribune’s Keller clarified: “He wants you to start a revolution here.”

Ghomin smiled and said: “I’m not an American,” as people laughed.

Conditions were so different in Egypt, he said, where there is immense poverty and frustration. “People really had nothing to lose – to revolt, you pay the price,” he said.

Ghomin paused and added: “I’m very apolitical and I’m very proud of it.”

People in each country must decide their course of action, he said, citing the impact of democracy and self-determination if individuals accept the real power of unbridled speech loosed by the Internet.

Depending on the result of Sunday’s Super Bowl, there are two potential scenarios for business partners and friends Steve Bremner and Paul Bernardi.

Scenario one: The Patriots exact revenge against the Giants for Super Bowl XLII. Bremner and Bernardi do not stick around to watch the confetti fall. Instead, they shoot over to their screen printing shop, Image Graphics, at 59 Fountain St. in Framingham, to pump out more than 3,000 kid-sized Patriots Super Bowl championship T-shirts, working until early Monday morning.

Scenario two: The Patriots lose. The presses stay quiet. And they ship blank white T-shirts to New York.

At Imprint Graphics, started by Bremner and Bernardi 25 years ago, the routine has been the same for every Super Bowl in which the Patriots have played: The boxes of blank T-shirts remain unopened until the final play, and the nervous printers watch the game from their homes — knowing that a Patriots victory means a profit.

But why do they wait until after the game to open the boxes?

“It’s kind of a superstition,” Bernardi said Saturday from the cluttered print shop, his hands splotched with red ink.

Having lived long enough to watch the ebb and flow of New England sports, he knows never to expect a win. Anyway, he said, sports fans are naturally superstitious.

He and Bremner were at the shop prepping the massive octopus-like printing press yesterday to make sure everything is ready to go before the big night.

Bernardi began by adjusting the calibrations for the press’ many squeegees, which move across stencils to imprint the shirt’s design, provided by Reebok. A shirt stops at multiple stencils during the printing process, at each stop receiving a different aspect of the design.

Next, Bernardi added ink to the press. The design calls for three colors — red, blue and silver. The press produces six to eight shirts a minute.

After the first shirt went through, Bremner and Bernardi carefully examined it next to the print information sheet that the distributor — in this case, Reebok — sends them.

They noted places where the colors came out too light or where the design looked skewed. The first shirt was OK. But the metallic silver ink was a bit too thick, Bernardi said, and so the color was off.

Once printed, the shirts run through a giant conveyor. Two people at the end of the conveyor catch the shirts and fold them. Then, another person boxes them.

“The whole thing is like Lucy in the chocolate factory,” Bremner joked.

Bremner and Bernardi work with a six-man crew. And they expect them to arrive at least partially sober. Of course, everyone takes a minute to celebrate before starting the grueling process.

Though he has printed shirts for the Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox, Bernardi favors the Super Bowl shirts.

“The nice thing with the Super Bowl is that you can plan ahead,” he said. “That’s not the case with other sports.”

This year’s design, they said, beats out 2008’s. Bremner remembers that year — that loss — well.

“We were ready to go — 19-0 and everything,” he said, his voice sounding notably sullen. “It just didn’t happen.”
